TDITM ’26 Color Guide: French Hen
This is the palette I used for my youngest daughter’s Twelve Days set during my 2026 Twelve Days in Twelve Months challenge. Below are the detailed felt/floss color guides for you.
First, some handy links to get you started:
To buy the pattern: mmmcrafts.etsy.com
To buy the felt colors you see below: Benzie Design, and search the colors by name. You’ll see an option to add matching floss. (Benzie also carries many of the notions and flosses you’ll need.)
COLOR GUIDES:
FELT COLORS:
Aqua: Head top, body back
Julep: Body front, head back
Turquoise: Tail, beak
White: Wing
Cherry Red: Flower, comb, wattle
Sherwood: Legs
Silver Metallic: Head base
EMBROIDERY COLORS:
Note: These are just the decorative colors. You’ll also need matching floss or thread colors to sew the felt pieces together. (There might be some overlap.)
DMC 310 (eye only)
DMC Blanc
DMC 500 (small leaf sprig, belly, “No” on back)
DMC 501 (large leaf sprig on wing)
DMC 321
DMC 3706 (flower, one French knot on wing)
DMC 3846
DMC 959 (center tail feather)
DMC 166
DMC G168 (loop)
OTHER NOTIONS:
I layered a 6 mm green metallic sequin plus a 5 mm iridescent sequin behind the knot on the eye. Instead of using the Flower Center, I layered a 12 mm silver sequin, 8 mm brass sequin, and a silver-lined glass seed bead. I also added a 5 mm iridescent translucent sequin under one of the French knots on the wing and also under each knot on the tail. And of course, added a little glam with the metallic silver head base.
I hope this color guide was helpful! Love to see what you make. Tag @mmmcrafts and #twelvedaysornaments on Instagram.
Hi Larissa, I have a question concerning the French Hen in the TDITM challenge. You used a 12 mm sequin in the flower. I am having a hard time finding them. Do you have a resource that you could recommend? I have tried Benzie and they don’t seem to carry any that big. I am working on my 3rd. set of ornaments and just love making them.
Thank you
Hey there! I’ve always had good luck finding larger sequins at my local craft stores. I actually have a grab bag of mixed sizes and colors I got about 10 years ago and it’s the gift that keeps on giving. haha! If you have no luck at a local shop, you can always find what you need online. Search 12 mm sequins on Etsy or Ebay, or you can simply follow the original instructions on the French Hen and use felt instead. 🙂
PS Debbie, I just saw a grab bag similar to mine online at Michaels, just FYI
